Parkway East Hospital: Celebrating Strong Mothers, Educating Curious Children

The great people at Goodfellas Consultancy came to us for a short video series for Parkway East Hospital in conjunction with their 80-year anniversary.

They wanted to produce a Mother’s Day Video as well as a Kids Interviewing Doctors Video.

What started off as a reference for a plain-looking set for a simple 2 person interview, soon evolved into a vibrant set design featuring Peranakan elements that were part of Parkway East Hospital’s background.

Here was the initial reference for the set design:

Here is the planned design of the set with the Peranakan elements:

Here is the final look done up by the resourceful Art Team: Clarissa (Art Director) and Kylen (Art Assistant) + special thanks to Pei Wen (Hair, Makeup Artist) for the whiteboard anatomy art, along with the lighting done by the Lighting Team: Niki (Gaffer), Azman (Grip), and Syahir (Junior Grip). Finally, the efficient Camera Team: Alvin, Thomas, and Deryck.

It was a great learning experience for the director of this video series, Stephen. Interacting with kids can sometimes be a challenge on set, especially if they are not interested or unable to communicate their thoughts.

Luckily we had some experience working with child actors in previous narrative films, so we were able to stay calm and think of solutions.

In the “Kids Interviews Doctors” segment, one of the kid interviewers was camera shy and reluctant to speak up. Fortunately, we were able to direct the doctor interviewee to coax her into conversing more by in turn asking her questions that she might be curious about.

We also had the pleasure of working with veteran Sound Recordist, Rasyid. He made sure that the audio was crystal clear despite the child interviewers who tend to get restless and move around.

Despite the roughly 1 hour of content taken from each interview, we managed to pick out the essential, impactful moments in Post-Production. This was made possible through the clear communication between the Director (Stephen) and Editor (Kylen), combined with the effective workflow management of the folks over at Goodfellas.

We were able to achieve Parkway East Hospital’s intended vision of a video celebrating the efforts of Mothers, as well as educating children with their resident doctors.
