Saying Too Much with Jaime Wong

Flip phones, CD Boomboxes, bubblegum tattoos. The nostalgic memories of the 2000s that defined a generation.

Jaime Wong, a local singer came to us with an idea to relive her teenage days.

Having worked in the corporate sector for 7 years since her last music release, Jaime finds that she struggles to reconcile the need for economic stability with the need to create. She’s in her 30s and feels out of touch, fraudulent and irrelevant, having witnessed the continuous emergence of local musicians, each more talented (and younger) than the one before.

With “I Say Too Much”, Jaime hopes to have people her age and in a similar life phase struggling to stay creative relate to this song; while existing in an increasingly competitive art scene.

“I Say Too Much” does not boast of the ability to bring local music to 'greater heights', but it does seek to speak to those who feel alienated and left out when everything and everyone else seems to be so much further ahead. This may very well be "saying too much", but someone has got to say it.

The story was developed by our resident Director, Alvin and Producer/Writer, Stephen. Jaime had a rough vision for the music video to be about a 60+-year-old woman doing typical teenage stuff with her friends who are in their 30s. We were once teenagers in the early 2000s; which helped us draw from personal experiences.

We expanded upon the idea by having the 60+ year-old woman represent Jaime’s initial alienation; feeling like a literal old person among her peers. She slowly learns to embrace this feeling, and finally transforms back into her real self.

For the main tech crew, we decided to get our resident Director of Photography, Thomas. For the Gaffer who got Tim, who have worked with many times before. This crew was selected for their speciality in practical lighting and a keen eye for detail. They were assisted by our fellow camera assistants and grips, Justin, Lennard, and Bernard.

The art for this video is essentially the main character in this video. We decided to get Mayle who is an experienced set designer and art director. Besides the amazing transformation of the house location into a 2000s teenage dream, he also pulled through with the wardrobe fit for the cast.

The similar overalls for old and young Jaime were a nice touch for their look, as they gave off a sense of childlike wonder and playfulness. Mayle worked closely with our Hair, Makeup Artist, Skye, to ensure that the perfect 2000s teenage look was achieved.

We were also extremely lucky to have Jaime’s friends be part of this music video. Despite having no acting experience, they were really fun and performed with high energy throughout the shoot. This helped boost the mood on set and encouraged our casted talent, Magdalene (Older Jaime) to let loose and match their enthusiasm.

With the combined effort of everyone from this production, we were able to produce a fun, upbeat music video that represented Jaime Wong’s vision for “I Say Too Much”.
